Description

Background / situation

Description

Typical. The building on the corner of rue du Petit-Chêne and rue du Midi, Lausanne, is protected by the Service des monuments et sites vaudois. Classified at level 3, the building deserves to be preserved, but may undergo certain modifications.

Built in the years 1870-1875, it is representative of the architecture of a city that opened up towards the lake. Typical of the city, the building is well known to the people of Lausanne, and is sure to strike any newcomer to the Vaud capital by train: the city is on a slope, and the climb up Petit-Chêne provides an opportunity to admire the work of the old builders!

Program

Description

A facelift. Typical but aging, the building was in need of a serious facelift, especially as the two busy streets on which it sits are home to a variety of shops and restaurants. So, in 2014, the owner decided to carry out an external renovation to give the balcony locks and walkways a new lease of life. The work, carried out in 2015, therefore enabled the molasse and stone facades to be treated, all the windows and shutters to be replaced and, above all, all the locksmithing to be rejuvenated by sandblasting.

Highlights

Description

Respecting deadlines and the neighborhood. The work presented several challenges. The first was the building's classification, which imposed various restrictions on the choice of materials for renovating the facade. Deadlines and costs were kept under control by strict planning on the part of the Générale company called to the building's bedside.

Finally, the Rue du Petit-Chêne, an urban area that combines density of private and commercial residents with busy pedestrian traffic, imposed special measures with regard to the congestion of the works and the control of noise pollution.
